Moving & Positioning of People: All wales Passport

Course Info

Acumen Care Education has been delivering Moving & Positioning of People: All Wales Passport, in accordance with Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), for over 10 years and continue to raise the standards of delivery.

Acumen Care Education employs fully qualified facilitators who undergo regular monitoring checks to ensure the best standard of training is given to Health and Social Care employees. We are committed to changing the culture within the industry by providing consistent support and guidance, even after the training has finished.

Learning Aims

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Understand role and responsibility with legislation
  • Identify how to apply ergonomics and risk assessment to your workplace
  • Know how to maintain safety of self and others
  • Understand unsafe practices and their consequences
  • Be able to carry out safe and effective practice with a variety of equipment

Course Content (2 days)

During Day 1, you will be provided with the below information, in line with Module A of the All Wales Passport Scheme:

  • Introduction to Moving & Positioning of People
  • Legislation & Policy
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders and Avoidance of Injuries
  • Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
  • Safe principles of Handling
  • Unsafe Manual Handling practices

You will be required to participate throughout your training session and will be asked to carry out group work activities along with question and answers. You will also complete the workbook provided to you, which will be signed off by your facilitator at the end of the training session.

You will begin Module B, Inanimate Load Handling, where you will cover the following:

  • Safe principles of Handling, weight guidelines and storage
  • Formal and dynamic risk assessment
  • Appropriate positioning when seated

You will also be required to carry out the following practical techniques:

  • Pushing and Pulling of objects
  • Lifting and Lowering of objects
  • Appropriate positioning when seated

Please ensure you advise your facilitator if there are any concerns when performing any of the above techniques.

You will begin Day 2 of your training with the introduction of People Handling skills. You will start by covering Module C of the All Wales Passport Scheme and be given the following information:

  • Safe principles of Handling of People
  • Risk Assessment
  • Unsafe practices when sitting, standing and/or walking an individual

You will also be required to carry out the following techniques as shown by your facilitator:

  • Assisting a person forward/back in a chair
  • Assisting a person to sit/stand from chair/bed
  • Assisting a person to walk
  • The falling person
  • Raising the fallen person
  • Moving a person out of a confined space

You will also be provided with the following information in relation to Module D, Bed Mobility, of the All Wales Passport Scheme:

  • Principles and types of slide sheets
  • Unsafe practices and safety checks of using equipment
  • Turning an individual in bed
  • Fitting/removing slide sheets
  • Repositioning a person using slide sheets
  • Sitting/lying a person in bed
  • Positioning a person onto the edge of the bed

You will be provided with clear instruction and demonstration throughout the above techniques. 

You will be provided with the following information in relation to Module E, Lateral Transfers, of the All Wales Passport Scheme:

  • Methods of maintaining personal hygiene
  • Unsafe practice and safety checks of equipment

You will also be required to carry out the following techniques:

  • Standing transfer bed/chair
  • Seated transfer bed/chair
  • Transfer from chair to chair/commode/toilet

You will be provided with the following information in relation to Module F, Hoisting, of the All Wales Passport Scheme:

  • Types, principles and safety checks of hoists
  • Types, principles and safety checks of slings
  • Unsafe practices when using hoists and slings
  • Main points of LOLER

You will also be required to carry out the following techniques:

  • Fitting a sling with a person in bed and chair
  • Fitting a sling using slide sheets
  • Hoist an individual from bed/chair
  • Hoist a person from the floor
  • Use of a standing hoist

Course Duration

This course is delivered over 2 days, in accordance with the WLGA, between 0930 – 1630.

Learners will be provided with refreshments throughout the training course, although lunch is not provided.

Training Materials

Learners will be provided with a workbook where they will be required to complete throughout their training day. Workbooks will be assessed by the facilitator. Learners will be able to take this workbook with them and can use as evidence for a qualification and/or as a reference guide. All materials have been mapped to the All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF) and QCF standards.
